PortablePowerPLUS – Frequently Asked Questions
I have a medium-size portable generator and I have run my central air conditioner with it. What are the risks? It is unlikely that your generator has enough wattage to run you air conditioner safely. While it may work, you are risking potential damage to your air conditioner, your generator, appliances, and even your home’s electrical wiring.
How much gas does it go through in a day? PortablePowerPLUS will use about 15 gallons of gasoline in 10 hours running at 50 percent capacity. We provide you with 3-5 gallon safety gas containers that are UL listed, which ensures they are safe for gasoline storage .
Who makes the unit and what size is it? It is made by Guardian Generac and it is 17.5 kilowatts (17,500 watts) or 73 amps.
How is this different than other larger portable units? There are three main differences. 1) This is the largest portable-based solution on the market today, so it can power your central air conditioner safely. 2) It is safer. With the installation of transfer equipment you don’t have to worry about extension cords running through your house or back feeding electricity to power lines, which can be dangerous to your family, neighbors and utility restoration workers. 3) Readi-Power will handle all the arrangements for you, such as getting the electrical permit for the transfer switch, providing the electrician, delivering the generator and safety gas containers to your home, helping you select a safe location for the generator and showing you how to use it.
What if I have more than one central air conditioning unit? That is perfectly OK. You just need to select one central air conditioning unit or zone in your house to run at a time. That is one of the great advantages of PortablePowerPLUS. You could use the air conditioning unit that cools the main living area of your home during the day and switch over in the evening to the unit that cools the bedrooms.
How quickly can I have this installed? Installation timeframes vary by area and are dependent upon the governmental permitting authority. We have worked closely with local governments to help streamline the permitting process. Current expectations are that your system would be installed within four weeks of signing a contract.
Can it be stored outside? Yes. But, you should make sure it is properly covered and secured to protect your investment from weather damage and theft.
How is this different than permanent generators? It is more economical, installation times are shorter, it uses regular gasoline, and you can take it with you if you move.
