Install Today - Before Bad Weather Strikes

One Plug gives you a direct connection to your portable generator - outside at your meter - and the power flows through your central circuit breaker panel. Here's how it works:

Learn how One Plug works »

Step 1: If there's a power outage, turn off all the switches on your circuit breaker panel.

Step 2: Connect your portable generator to the One Plug device using the supplied 20-foot quick-connect cable. A 40-foot cable is also available.

Step 3: Start your generator, then select the appliances to receive power on your circuit breaker panel. You can choose which appliances receive power quickly and easily simply by turning circuit breaker switches on and off.

Testing your One Plug Device

FPLES recommends regular testing of your generator and One Plug device to ensure both are functioning properly. If after testing your One Plug device you find that it is in need of servicing, FPLES has contractors available to assist you. For more information, or to schedule a service call, please call 1-877-ONE-PLUG (1-877-663-7584). Representatives are available Monday-Friday, 8:30 am-4:30 pm EST. See if One Plug Will Work for You

One Plug is compatible with most meters and portable generators. Please check your home's square footage, your meter's seven-character number and the receptacle on your generator and have this information ready when ordering the One Plug device.

Check 1: Home Size Qualification

Your home has to have 3,500 square feet or less under air.

Check 2: Meter Qualification Check

The second character must be a C and the third character must not be a J, K or L. Once you find your meter number (shown in red) located on the front of the meter toward the bottom and verify it is compatible, please write it down and have it handy when you call.

Your meter's seven-character number

NOTE: The final determination of whether the One Plug program device can be installed will be made by the electrician when he inspects the meter can and meter.

Check 3: Generator Qualification

Most modern portable generators connect easily to the One Plug device. As a guide, One Plug should be used with a generator that has the following features:

  • A four-wire 120/240-volt outlet with a L14-20 or L14-30 locking.
  • Maximum wattage through the device is 7.2 kW (30 amps), regardless of the overall capacity of your generator.

Wattage Calculation Worksheet

The Wattage Calculation Worksheet should be completed before you use your One Plug device. This will help you understand the load requirements you plan to use and ensure this requirement doesn't exceed the capacity of your generator or the One Plug device. Please print the worksheet and follow the directions below to determine which appliances you can use.

  1. Enter the maximum and continuous wattage output ratings for your generator in box A. NOTE: If the wattage for the generator exceeds the capacity of the device, write down the capacity of the One Plug device in this box. Do not exceed the capacity of your One Plug or the device will automatically shut off.
  2. From the Appliance Energy Guide, select the appliances you wish to operate and write them down in column B, along with the starting factor (column C) and running watts (column D).
  3. For each appliance you have selected, multiply the starting factor by the running watts to obtain the load watts. Enter figure in column E.
  4. Next, write down the wattage of all the lights you plan to use. Then list the total number for each of the different lights in box F. Multiply this by the wattage to get the load watts.
  5. Finally, add up all of the load wattages for each appliance and lights in column E and enter the total in box G. The number in box G represents the total amount of load you plan to run on your portable generator, which will also be fed through your One Plug program device. Be sure that the total load in box G does not exceed the generator size/capacity of the device in box A.

How to Use the Appliance Energy Guide

The wattages on the Appliance Energy Guide are estimates. The estimated wattage required for your appliances can be easily calculated. For example:

1 kW = 1,000 watts
2 kW = 2,000 watts and so on

The formula for finding wattage is Volts x Amps = Watts (running).

Always use the starting factor when calculating electrical load requirements for your generator. Select the appliances you want to operate and add the starting wattages together to determine if they can all be operated at the same time without exceeding the capacity of your generator and the One Plug device.

NOTE: Individual circuit breakers on your breaker panel may control more than one appliance. Always determine which appliance loads are connected to specific breakers (switches). Also, disconnect or unplug any appliances connected to the circuit breaker switch that you don't plan to use. This may help reduce the overall load associated with the circuit breaker switch in your panel.
